Continuous Mixing & Paving

The RapidMix 400CW produces high quality, controlled mixtures for utilisation in a range of civil engineering applications, from airport runways and dam construction to soil stabilisation and the treatment of contaminated land. The mobile nature of the plant, combined with its technologically advanced design, is most advantageous in allowing KMC Construction to meet the demand on projects.

The RapidMix 400CW provides a cost-effective solution to projects where compliance with technical specifications coupled with demand for high-volume output is critical. Blending of materials is done at rates of between 300 and 400 tons per hour.

Applications:

  • Blending of multiple aggregates for road construction

  • Stabilising of aggregates with cement and/or bituminous emulsion to optimum moisture content (OMC) for road subbase and bases

  • Mixing of G1 material to OMC for road bases

  • Roller-compacted concrete (RCC)

The final aggregate produced with the RapidMix 400CW is transported to an aggregate paver which then spreads and places the material to the required width and grade for the roadway being constructed. The remainder of the process follows conventional methods.

There are three distinct advantages when using the in-plant process. First, it results in improved workability and lead times as the material is placed at the precise OMC. Second, there are no windrows (i.e. near zero waste of expensive material). Third, the consistency of the blended material, mixed with the in-plant method, cannot be matched with conventional methods -This fact is critical to the durability of the road. Overall, the quality of the product is improved with greatly reduced lead times also being achieved.

Bitumen Stabilised Materials

Ever increasing economic pressure and environmental awareness drives the development of more effective technologies for road construction and rehabilitation. This has seen an increased interest in pavement rehabilitation using in-situ stabilisation with bitumen. Stabilisation with bitumen provides environmental benefits such as low temperature construction and the use of existing material in the pavement structure.

Our continuous mixing plant process positions KMC Construction as a market leader in the application of bitumen stabilised materials (BSM). In-plant treatment of materials results in far consistency and homogeneity compared to other conventional methods of mixing and blending of material. This has recently been proven on a road rehabilitation project in the Vaal Triangle area where several sections of BSM base layers were constructed successfully. Numerous tests were performed on-site including tests relating to comparisons between using a road recycling machine versus the in-plant treatment method employed by KMC Construction. Tests performed by certified laboratories, in close collaboration with Pavement Engineers, proved that the in-plant mixing method is a superior process.

The efficiency of this method of construction means that clients are able to build more kilometres of road with the same budget. Further to this, roads constructed using BSM layers are far more durable due to the high level of consistency achieved using this method.

Asphalt Paving

The responsible use of fossil fuels and associated binder products used by the asphalt industry drives the need for constant innovation. Continuous research into engineering stronger asphalt pavements which are more economical and sustainable also results in the necessary changes to the methods of construction required. As these changes occur, we will ensure adaptation through the use of the latest technology of asphalt pavers in our fleet. Incorporating 3D survey technology we are able to ensure that the best quality, rideability, levels and grades are achieved in the roads we construct.

Slipform Concrete

KMC Construction possesses a wealth of experience when it comes to slipform paving. Starting from smaller jobs, using medium-sized pavers on our infrastructure projects and expanding to major projects, using specialised slipforming techniques, for major contractors. Through the amalgamation of the slipform operation from another major contractor, KMC Construction was able to procure the machines, equipment and teams involved in all their past successfully executed slipform work. We now boast the largest complement of slipform pavers in the country allowing us to offer a broad range of products including, but not limited to: roads; runways; track slabs; barriers; parapets; channels; sidewalks; and drains.

Wirtgen SP500 & SP25 Slipform Pavers

Best precision available
We employ fully automated 3D guidance systems, backed by Leica Geosystems.

Low slump concrete
Low slumps and cement-water ratios result in high early strengths and mean that the pavement may be trafficked sooner.

Best for large area of paving
Pavers are capable of producing thousands of square meters of concrete pavement on a daily basis.

It is a faster process
Slipform paving is classified as a rapid construction technique meaning high production rates are achieved repeatedly, saving both time and money.

Creates better looks
Producing a high-quality product, consistently means that the end-product looks great, all the time.

Power Curber® & Reimer® Mobile Continuous Concrete Mixer

The Power Curber 5700-C, including its predecessor 5700-B, models are KMC Construction's highly successful 'one-machine' solution for in-situ concrete slipform applications. This machine's compact size and versatility allow KMC Construction to achieve high levels of productivity, a high-quality product, great finishing, all at a very competitive price. The Power Curber can manoeuvre itself out of tight spots fast, making tight radius work as typically found in parking lots a breeze.

Besides a variety of curbing, the Power Curber can quickly convert to cast V-drains (up to 3m wide), U-drains, barriers, sidewalks, bridge parapets and other specialised slipform works. Aided by a mobile continuous concrete mixer (Reimer), efficiency is guaranteed, especially in remote areas. The Reimer also enables the Power Curber team to adjust the concrete mix design instantly, if required.
